In one fell swoop, this son of a market vendor from Indian Trail, central Trinidad, has made a quantum leap as the front-runner who turned misfortune into fortune by using Bassant’s negative reporting as the main tool to be used by the Dr Keith Rowley-led grand old party over the next few months.
As the party which has traditionally been successful at coming out as victors from under attack for being champions of the black and poor, the PNM is expected to exploit this situation to its fullest benefit in its quest to improve its Local Government electoral status as a platform for increasing its margins in general elections due in 2025.
Apart from the Shouter Baptists, Cummings has received strong support from the very powerful Black Agenda group led by Dr David Muhammad and from several other groups and individuals in the black and mixed community.
What they are pointing to most vehemently is the diligence with which TV 6 has been hounding down Cummings for the receipt of a number of loans by his family’s businesses in an arrangement which, according to his attorney Ramesh Laurence Maharaj SC, does not appear to pose any particular problems.
This is in stark contrast to the case of numerous businessmen of east Indian descent who, as identified by Dr Muhammad, have historically benefitted to the tune of hundreds of millions for dollars written off by government and private lenders over time.
